I love this painting of my in-laws because it encapsulates their relationship with each other and their relationship with the world. As a couple, they were a united front, and in this portrait, they engage us directly, confident in their love.
It’s been almost a year since we lost my dear mother-in-law (A”H). Hava managed to capture her skin’s luminosity – and through my mother-in-law’s warm gaze – the generosity of her spirit. The rich detail of her dress and jewellery described with such meticulous precision denotes elegance, whilst her hand gently grasping my father in law’s jacket portrays intimacy.
My mother-in-law was an enigma; she was regal and sophisticated yet tactile, always exuding warmth and love. Though her loss has left a gaping hole in all our lives, this portrait, so beautifully rendered, allows us as a family to feel her essence whenever we look at it.
